Exhibit and Content Creation - Desert Biome Puzzle Case Study
In late 2023, NHMU wanted a way to update their Life gallery experience without making any physical changes in the exhibits. By collaborating with museum curators, public programs staff, and local illustrators, I developed the Desert Biome Food Web Puzzle. Pictured first in the slideshow below, the diorama in NHMU’s Life gallery displays the flora and fauna found in Utah’s desert landscapes (Image 1). I aimed to create a new experience for guests by developing a food web which doubles as a physical puzzle. I gathered details about the species within the diorama from museum curators (Image 2 and 3), met with public programs staff to create a mock-up, and worked with local artists to illustrate the plants and animals that would be placed on the puzzle pieces (Image 4). I also ensured the physical puzzle would be accessible. For example, the physical pieces large enough for individuals with limited mobility to manipulate, and the food web lines and puzzle text bright and large enough for those with limited visibility to read and differentiate. By including a drawer within the puzzle, the pieces have a safe place to live when not in use.
After delays in the production process at the University of Utah carpentry shop, the wooden puzzle was finally created in early 2025 (Image 5). The puzzle is currently in the next phase of design - adding the species images and names onto the puzzle and pieces.
